Wednesday was market day in the village and Farmer Bales took the cart, loaded with vegetables for sale. That day when Oliver, the horse, was being hitched up, all the other creatures looked longingly at him. “I wish we all could come too,” said Gail, the red hen. But the Farmer Bales trotted off leaving them behind. Jean, the sheep, came up and whispered to the others, “The fence is broken near the pond! Let’s go!” Delighted, the creatures followed her and slipped through the broken fence. They trotted, ran and flew along to the village. The villagers, crowding around the stalls of fruits and vegetables, suddenly found sheep, a cow, some ducks and hens, two roosters, chickens and ducklings, a sheepdog, a spaniel and a donkey in the market! “Hey! Are these for sale?” shouted a farmer. Bales found all his farm animals there! “No!” he yelled, as he herded them all back to his farm!
