Toad fish are found in marine, brackish and freshwater habitats. These bottom-dwellers are 7.5–57.0 cm long. They are heavy-bodied and scale-less with flattened heads and high-set eyes. They eat fish, sea worms, crustaceans and molluscs. The male uses the swim bladder as a sound-producing device to attract mates. Females produce sticky eggs, attaching them to the side of the nest. Its lifespan is 19 years.
