Tol

Tol

Tol is a custom celebrated on a child’s first birthday in Korea.

Do you know: In the past people would start the Tol day with a prayer to the mountain god–Sanshin and the birth goddess–Samshin.

On the Tol day, the baby is dressed in colourful clothes known as ‘Tol-bok’, which are different for boys and girls. A special belt and pouch are also worn for long life and good luck. A table with various items including food, thread, brush, bow and arrow, scissors, etc. is placed in front of the baby. The first item to be picked by the baby is indicative of what he will become when he is older.
