It is a short-lived perennial plant, grown as an annual plant. The plant has a weak woody stem that usually scrambles over other plants. The fruit is an edible, brightly coloured (usually red, from the pigment lycopene) berry. The fruit was believed to benefit the heart, as it contains lycopene, one of the most powerful natural antioxidants which, especially when cooked, has been found to help prevent various types of cancer. Tomatoes help to dissolve animal fat in butter, cheese, eggs, etc, preventing the hardening of the arteries, while the high potassium-content helps reduce high blood pressure.
