Traffic Lights

Traffic lights that we see in today are a contribution from the USA to the world. It was in the early 1912 in Utah that a policeman Lester Wire created the first ever red and green traffic light. It was in the year 1914 that the traffic signal system was installed by the American Traffic Signal Company around the corner of the East 105th Street and in the Euclid Avenue in Ohio. Back then, it consisted of just red and green colours along with a buzzer that would warn about the colour change. The first three colours and four-way traffic light was a creation of officer William Potts in the year 1920, Michigan. However, the very invention of the traffic light dates back to 10 December, 1868, which was installed in London, just outside the British Houses of Parliament. The inventor was J.P. Knight, a railway engineer. Since it was still in its nascent stage, this traffic light exploded on 2 January, 1869.
