23rd March, 1931 was a black day.
On that day the barbaric colonial rulers hanged three precious sons of India namely Sardar Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev for the revenge killing of Sanders whose lathi blows had felled Lala Lajpatrai in Lahore.
The people were shocked and plunged in grief.
For Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi it was simply devastation. He knew Bhagat Singh so well and he almost revered him like a revolutionary god. He also knew Rajguru and Sukhdev whom he had met several times along with Bhagat and Chandra Shekhar Azad.
Only some time ago the police had killed Chandra Shekhar Azad in an encounter in the Alfred Park of Allahabad. Vidyarthi was so close to Azad.
His death had left a deep scar on Vidyarthi’s heart.
And now Bhagat Singh was also taken away by the cruel enemy. All those bright young people had gone. The darkness spread before the eyes of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi.
