Tricky Trick (Science Experiments)

Materials Required:
l Playing card
l Drinking glass
l Coin

Procedure:

  1. Set a playing card on top of a drinking glass, and place a coin in the center of the card.
  2. Form a tight circle with your thumb and index finger. Then quickly flick your finger outward, hitting the edge of the card. The card will shoot away and the coin will drop into the glass.

This Is What Happens:
There is very little friction between the coin and the playing card because of their smoothness. When you snap the card, it is quickly set into motion. However, the inertia of the heavier object—the coin—causes it to remain in place. Without the card to support it, the coin falls.
