True Nature

Mr Green was very kind to all creatures. Whenever he saw any bird or animal that was injured, he would bring it home and look after it till it was well enough to walk or fly away. Mrs Green helped him, but warned him not to do anything stupid.
“Turtles and ducks and kittens and puppies are fine. But you end up with injured owls and hawks, a mongoose and even a fox! They are animals, my dear,” she warned her husband, “And they will follow their true nature always. So do be careful.”
One winter evening when Mr Green was returning from the garage where he worked, he found a snake lying by the wayside. He bent down to see if the snake was dead.
“No, the poor fellow seems to be alive, but frozen with the cold,” thought Mr Green.
As usual, Mr Green felt very sorry for the creature. He promptly took off his sweater and wrapped it around the snake. He picked up the bundle carefully and carried it home.

Mrs Green was terrified when she saw what he had brought home this time. “A snake! Honestly, Albert, you are the most foolish man on earth!” she exclaimed.
But Mr Green’s son was very excited seeing the snake. His father put the snake down near the fireplace so that it might get warmth and revive. His son, Bill, settled down on the rug near it to watch the snake.
The snake was beautiful, with black and brown markings on it. Bill watched it fascinated. Mr Green had his tea while Mrs Green grumbled as she served him some bread and butter and cake, keeping a wary eye on the frozen snake.
In a little while, Bill exclaimed that the snake was showing signs of thawing out.
“It’ll be moving soon, Dad,” he said.

Mr Green happily drank his tea. Bill thought he would help warm up the snake. So, he reached out a hand to stroke it. In a flash, the snake coiled itself and raised its hood to strike.
Mr Green’s chair crashed as he rushed to pick the poker up. He hit the striking snake just in time. Mrs Green collapsed on the sofa, out of sheer fright and relief. Bill looked flabbergasted. He had been saved in the nick of time!
Mr Green was very careful what he brought home after that day.
Moral: Even kindness must be sensible.
