Tsunami means ‘harbour wave’ in Japanese language. This is caused by an underwater earthquake occurring less than 50 km below the seafloor. Tsunami occurs when one tectonic plate slips under another plate. This slip of plates leads to earthquake (Intensity: at least 5.5 on Richter scale). It can also occur due to coastal or underwater eruptions or landslide. The destructive force of tsunami can be felt thousands of kilometres away from the epicentre of the underwater earthquake.
