Turtle

Turtles are reptiles that spend most of their life in water.

Turtles can stay underwater for long periods of time but they need to

come to the surface to breathe.

Turtles come ashore on sandy beaches to build nests and lay their eggs.

Turtles have hard shells that protect them. This shell is called a ‘carapace’.

Turtles eat everything from algae to squid and jellyfish.

Turtles, when on land, eat insects, fruits and grass.

Most turtles can hide their heads and legs inside their shells to protect

themselves from predators. But not all turtles can do that.

Turtles are not social creatures. They mostly prefer to stay alone.

Some turtles grow up to six feet in size.

Some turtles are less than the size of our hand and can be kept as pets.
