While the moth ranges from 9-12 mm (females), the larvae reach a maximum length of 26 mm. Their diet is comprised of the leaves of plants in the Populus, Betula, Malus, Rosa, Prunus Virginiana, and Crataegus species among others. A female moth will lay 25-200 eggs, on the base of the shoots of the chokecherry plant near the ground. The larvae are social in nature and create silken nests by tying together leaves and feeding on them.
