Unbreakable Rocks (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Plastic container
  2. Rocks (limestone, sandstone, granite, etc.)
  3. Water

Figure out which kinds of rocks are more prone to breaking once they have been frozen and thawed a few times with this experiment.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Try hypothesizing with your
friends, on which type of rock will be
most prone to breaking and cracking
    after freezing.
  2. Place the rocks in a plastic container and submerge the rocks in water.
  3. Once all the rocks are submerged in water, keep the container in the freezer. Let it sit there till the water freezes.
  4. Remove the container after the water has frozen and let it thaw till the ice is back in the liquid state.
  5. Repeat this process of
    freezing and thawing
    at least 6-7 times.

RESULT

You will notice some rocks are already beginning to change and erode. Tiny cracks may have formed in the rocks and small pieces may have chipped off. Even though we assume rocks to be sturdy and solid yet they have small pores and cracks on the surface. These pockets on the rock surface can absorb water. And once this absorbed water freezes, it expands, resulting in cracks, which eventually leads to the pieces of the rock breaking off entirely.
