Union is Strength

Union is strength, is a wise-old saying. It is self-evident. Whenever we were fragmented, we faced downfall. We should seek a lesson from the saying and be united; only then, we can face the enemy, we can withstand the adverse conditions, we can survive and finally we can be victorious. There runs a story, which tells how an old man was troubled to find his sons always quarrelling. He was afraid that the family would break up when he would die. He was anxious to leave behind a united family. So, one day he called all his sons, gave them a bundle of sticks and asked them to break it. Each of them tried, but all in vain. Then he untied the bundle and told them to break each stick individually. Now they easily broke the sticks. It is in this way that the old man taught his sons that unity is strength. He taught them a lesson that if they live together as one family, they would be strong, happy and victorious.
The same is true in war. National unity is essential in times of war. A large army, whose officers are not united, is very easily beaten by a smaller but united army. It was the strategy of Napoleon ‘Divide and Conquer’. He won some of his great victories by attacking his enemies when they were alone. He would weaken a strong nation by dividing it up into quarrelling parties and then crush it. The same policy ‘Divide and Rule’ was adopted by the Britishers who first divided us and then ruled us for a long time period. They created dissensions in our country and then ruled over it. Thus, it is true that ‘united we stand, divided we fall’.
