Common name : Vagrant spider
Scientific name : Uliodon spp.
Family : Zoropsidae
Native to : New Zealand and Australia
Interesting fact : Also known as prowling spiders, the vagrant spiders are a species of spiders that can run very fast, and then freeze all of a sudden.
About 20 mm in length, the vagrant spiders are typically brown to black in colour. They are usually found on forest floors, but have also been spotted in gardens and shrubs. Nocturnal in nature, they hide under rocks and logs during the day. Their diet is comprised of ground dwelling invertebrates. The vagrant spider uses its webbing as a retreat in the daytime and to bind the egg sack. Its bite, though painful on account of the large fangs, displays mild symptoms.
