The vampire squid has a gelatinous, velvety jet-black bodyand large eyes that are red or blue. Its eight arms are connected bya webbing of skin, each arm lined with rows of spines and suckerson the tips. When threatened, it inverts its arms back over the body, presenting a larger body covered with spines. It feeds on copepods, prawns, cnidarians and detritus.
