Vasily Yakovlevich Chichagov was born on 28th February 1726 in the Russian Empire and he died on 4th April 1809 (aged 83 years) in Saint Petersburg in Russia. A Russian Navy Admiral and explorer, Vasily was in charge of the expedition to find the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans along the Siberian coast. He was a successful naval leader and was a part of the Russo-Turkish war against the Ottomans. During the Russo-Swedish war he was commander-in-chief of the Baltic Fleet and he won some important battles which allowed the war to come to an end.
