Common name : Vegetable weevil
Scientific name : Listroderes costirotris obliquus
Family : Curculionidae
Native to : South America
Interesting fact : This insect reproduces parthenogenetically, hence only one insect is required to establish the species in a new area or region.
6.4-10.0 mm in body length, the vegetable weevil is brownish in colour. This insect is polyphagous in nature. While its diet primarily is comprised of a variety of vegetables, it is also known to feed on flowers and other plants. Females deposit the eggs on the host plants. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the buds and underside of the leaves of the host plants. After it has fed, it forms a earthen cell around itself in the soil and pupates.
