VII. The Uttara Episode

Return to Ayodhya

Indra, the king of gods, along with the other gods descended to the earth to thank Rama for saving them all from Ravana. There was one day left to complete the period of exile, so Rama immediately wanted to go to Ayodhya. King Vibheeshana asked Rama to board the Pushpaka Vimana (an aerial chariot). Then Rama, Seeta and Lakshmana sat in the Pushpaka Vimana. The Vimana flew towards Ayodhya. Across the sea at Rameshwaram Rama worshipped Shiva. On the way back, Rama got down at all the ashramas he went to during the exile and eulogised all the saints, the sages and the seers.
In the evening, upon reaching Sage Bhardwaj’s ashrama at Chitrakoot Rama said to Hanuman, “Go ahead of us to tell Bharata the news of our arrival.” Without losing a moment Hanuman immediately headed towards Ayodhya.
He sent Hanuman to know whether Bharata got attracted to the throne during the fourteen-year exile.

Sri Rama met Guha, chieftain of the Nishada tribe, at Shringverpur and took him along to Ayodhya.
