One day, Ram was in the midst of some discussions with his ministers when his guru sage Vishwamitra arrived at Ayodhya. Ram immediately went to receive his guru and escorted him to a seat. After a while, Vishwamitra explained the reason of his visit. “Ram! Yayati, the king of Kasi, has insulted me. If you are my true disciple, you must kill him. This is my command!” the sage said. Ram was now in a fix! He knew that Yayati was a noble king and would never be unfair or partial to anyone. ‘I have never heard Yayati disrespecting others. What has he done to incur the sage’s wrath?’ Ram wondered. But Ram understood that he had no choice. It was his duty to obey his guru’s command. On the other hand, he would lose a comrade in Yayati, a virtuous king, who looked after his people very ably.
