Vittorio Bottego was born on 29th July 1860 in Parma, Italy, and he died on 17th March 1897 (aged 37 years) in Ethiopia. Vittorio was an Italian army officer and one of the first Europeans to explore Jubaland which is now in Somalia. He led two expeditions there. In the first expedition, he traced the tributaries of the Ganale Doria River. During his second expedition, he explored the unknown region of upper Juba. He was the first European to follow River Omo to its confluence with Lake Turkana.
Do you know: Vittorio Bottego was killed by the Oromo tribe and the account of his expedition was given by two of his companions, Vannutelli and Citerni, who were kept prisoners for two years by the Emperor of Ethiopia but survived.
