Vladimir Vasilyevich Atlasov or Otlasov was born in 1661 in Veliky Ustyug, Russia, and he died in 1711. Known for organizing the first systematic exploration of Kamchatka Penninsula, and the volcanic Island of Atlasov which was named after him, Vladimir led an expedition to the Kamchatka and travelled on a reindeer with about 120 men. During this expedition he met the natives tribes. He made alliances with some of them and fought against others killing many of their people. He was sent back to be an administrator of the Kamchatka. His methods were so brutal that his men made a complaint against him and imprisoned him. He was later killed by a band of mutineers.
