Wakes & Windows

Wakes-&-Windows

Leaving windows open in the deceased’s house, holding wakes are funeral customs prevalent amongst the Irish.

Do you know: It is considered bad luck if someone were to block the path to an open window in the deceased person’s house.

The Irish believe that the windows of a house where someone has passed away must be left open for the spirit to leave the house freely. And after two hours, the windows must also be shut to prevent its return. Another memorial custom among the Irish is holding a wake (between the death and funeral) to celebrate the life and mourn the death of the person.
