Walnuts Dye (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 4 cups of water
  2. Large stainless steel vessel with lid
  3. Strainer
  4. Cloth material
  5. Disposable plastic container
  6. 3-4 cups of walnut shell
  7. Cotton balls and plastic bottles with thin nozzles

Try this fun way to stain your textile material with an all-natural dye made from walnut shells.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Soak the walnut shells in water in a large stainless steel vessel for more than 12 hours.
  2. After 12 hours, cover the vessel by lid and ask an adult to boil the shells in the water for 2 hours. Keep checking on the shells to make sure that the water does not boil away completely.
  3. After 2 hours the colour of the water would have turned a dark opaque brown. Your dye is now ready to be used.
  4. Gently, taking the help of an adult strain the dye water into a disposable plastic container with the help of a strainer.

RESULT

Soak any cloth material you want directly into the dye to stain it entirely or else use a cotton ball or a plastic bottle with a thin nozzle to get creative. The walnut dye can be used for colouring anything from your clothes to any other textiles. Walnut shell dyes have been used as an all-natural replacement to expensive chemical dyes.
