It is a large flippered marine mammal found across the northern hemisphere. Adult walruses are easily recognized by their prominent tusks, whiskers and bulkiness. The walrus is sparsely covered with fur and appears bald. Its skin is highly wrinkled and thick. Young walruses are deep brown and grow paler and more cinnamon-coloured as they age. Old males, in particular, become nearly pink.
