Water Pump (Super Science Experiments)

You will need:

1. Large bowl of water
2. Large drinking straw
3. Scissors
4. Kebab stick
5. Tape
6. Water

Create your own water pump with a few
elements and have fun getting your friends wet.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Firstly, we are going to make a triangle with the straw.
2. So ask an adult to help you cut the straw halfway, at 2 points. Do not cut the straw all the way. It should resemble the figure when bent.
3. Take your kebab stick and push the stick through the straw at the centre point of the straw all the way down.
4. Form a triangle with the straw and tape the kebab stick with 2 ends. Do not seal the straw. Just tape it so that it may be held in place.
5. Place your hand pump in a large bowl of water and gently start spinning it around.

RESULT

The water will climb through the two bottom ends of the straw and be released through the openings on the side. The faster you spin your stick, the greater will be the force with which the water lifts and sprays out of the side of the straw openings. This force is known as centrifugal force. This force is responsible for pushing the liquid upwards into the straw. Eventually with greater force the water spills out.
