Wattled Curassow

The Crax globulosa (scientific name) or wattled curassow is found only in the rainforest regions of Western Amazon basin, South America. 32-35 inches in length, this bird has overall black plumage, except for the area between the tail and legs, which is white (buff coloured in case of females). The feathers on its head are curled forward. The bill is bright crimson-red. The male has a red-coloured ornamental knob-like bony formation on the upper mandible and fleshy wattle halfway under the lower mandible. Its diet consists of small fish, insects, aquatic crustaceans, and fruits and seeds seasonally. While the male usually builds the nest alone, the female will incubate a clutch of 2-6 eggs alone for nearly 30 days. Its IUCN listing is ENDANGERED.
