Western Parotia

The Parotia sefilata (scientific name) or Western parotia is found only in two forested regions, the Wandammen Peninsula, Western New Guinea and Vogelkop mountain forests, Indonesia. 12.9 inches in length, this medium-sized bird-of-paradise has mostly black plumage with an iridescent golden-green breast shield and triangular silver crown feathers. It also has long black plumes on the side of the chest and three spatula-shaped head wires from behind each eye. The female is dull with brown plumage. Its diet consists of arthropods and fruits, especially figs. While they are polygamous in nature, the female alone builds the nest and attends to its clutch. The clutch-size and incubation period are not known. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
