Ultraviolet (UV) rays are a form of radiation just like light rays, x-rays, heat rays, etc. These rays are produced by the Sun naturally. They have a short wavelength and are highly penetrable. The harmful effects of these rays include reddening of the skin, suntan, aging and carcinogenic changes. However, most of the UV rays emitted by the Sun are absorbed by the external atmosphere of the Earth.
