What Gives Eyes their Colour?

The coloured part of our eyes is called the iris. A pigment called melanin is present in the iris. The level of melanin determines the colour of the eye; the more the percentage of melanin, the darker the eyes. Blue, green and grey eyes have less melanin in the iris and so are lighter in colour. The eyes that have less melanin are harmed more by the Sun’s rays than by brown or black eyes. Most people in the world will end up with brown eyes. Genetics or heredity plays an important role in determining the colour of our eyes. However, disease or aging can change the eye colour.
