Water is important for the growth of plants. Irrigation is the process of artificially supplying water to land or soil to help crops to grow. The need for irrigation arose when natural rainfall became insufficient for crops. People made drainages, canals, etc., to direct the reserved water, river water or flood waters towards the place where it is required. In ancient times, people used to make small channels in fields and passed water in them manually. Today, expensive dams and reservoirs are constructed to get water for irrigation. It is a successful technique for places where there is scarcity of rain.
