What is Paper?

Paper is made from the pulp of wood or from naturally occurring plant fibres called ‘cellulose.’ The earliest paper was papyrus, made from reeds by the ancient Egyptians. Nowadays, in the paper making process, first, the wood is shredded and made into pulp, by mixing it with water. It further goes through many steps like extracting excess water, drying, etc., to ultimately be coated with additives for smoothness and uniform thickness. Paper can be made fine and soft as in tissue paper or strong and sturdy as in construction paper. Paper is used for drawing and painting, writing, printing, for wrapping things, etc. Treatment can make it fire-resistant and waterproof. Recycling of paper is a must to save trees.
