Sand is soil that has granular appearance and found mainly on the beaches, riverbeds and in deserts. Sand is formed by the wearing and tearing down of solid rock by different weather conditions, such as rain, wind, frost, etc. These weather agents erode huge rocks and gradually break them into minute particles. The formation of sand is a slow process, it accumulates gradually over a long period of time. As rocks are made up of many minerals, these constitute the sand, too. The main ingredient of sand is silica, mostly in the form of quartz. Other constituents are volcanic glass, iron ores and calcareous material. Sea beaches are one of the prime areas where sand forms, as tides hit against rocks.
