What is the Metric System?

The metric system is a way of measuring things. In the past, there existed many variations in the weights and measurements used all over the world; hence the need for an international system of measurement arose. The metric system is based on the measure of length called the metre. It was worked out in France in 1789. This system of measurement is based on 10. In this system, the unit of length is ‘metre’ (one ten-millionth of distance on the surface of the Earth from pole to equator); of weight-gram (weight of a cubic centimetre of water); and of volume-litre. Great Britain and many other nations use this system.
