What’s an Oujja Board

Adele and Amy were sisters. Adele loved to watch ghost movies. One day, Adele and her little sister Amy were watching a movie about five youngsters who used the Oujja Board to call spirits. “What is an Oujja Board?” asked Amy. It was a rainy night. The girls did not have school the next day. “An Oujja Board can be used to talk to spirits, Amy,” said Adele. “Really? So, if we prepare an Oujja Board, will we be able to talk to spirits, too,” asked Amy, her eyes wide with curiosity. “Of course,” said Adele, “All you have to do is place your fingers on a piece of wood, which is called planchette. It will move automatically towards the numbers and the letters, and we will know what the spirit is saying.” “Will the planchette really move? I want to see it,” cried Amy in delight. “I will show you, but let’s have our dinner first,” said Adele.

The Girls Call Spirits

The girls then quickly finished their dinner and sat down to call the spirits. Adele first wrote all the letters from A to Z. Then, she wrote down the numbers 0 to 9. She also wrote down the words ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ on top of the board. However, when the two girls started calling in the spirits, nothing happened. “Forget it, maybe today is not the right day,” said Adele. She was actually very scared but did not want her sister to know it. She folded the Oujja Board and both the girls then sat down to watch a ghost movie. Soon after the movie, the girls said goodnight to their parents and went off to sleep. In bed, they started chitchatting. Soon Amy said, “Adele, I am hungry. Please come with me to the kitchen.” Though Adele was also hungry yet she was too sleepy and tired. “You go alone,” she said, and she cuddled up on her bed.

The Scary Shadows

“Adele, please come with me. I don’t want to go to the kitchen alone,” she begged. Finally, Adele relented and both the sisters tiptoed to the kitchen so that their parents might not hear them. Adele then started scrounging for food. Finally, she found a packet of chips. The children then made their way back to the bedroom. As they passed through a window in the corridor, the children heard some sounds from the garage. “Are mother and father in the garage?” asked Adele to Amy. “But what would they be doing there at this time of night,” said Amy. “I don’t know; let’s check,” said Adele. Both the girls peeped out of the window. It was Amy who screamed first! Some strange shadows, which looked like some people holding up knives in their hands, stood outside the window. Amy pointed them out to Adele. Horrified, the two girls ran back to their bedroom.

The Girls are Terrified

The girls lay down restless on their bed unable to sleep. After sometime, Adele got up from her bed again and asked Amy to follow her. They then crept to the window and looked out. The front door of their house was open. When they looked towards the garage, that door was closed. They looked towards the pavement and saw a bush moving. There was no wind. “There is somebody in the bushes,” cried Amy. “No, no. Don’t worry. It must be the wind,” said Adele, as she did not want Amy to be scared. However, Adele wondered if it was the spirits they had called out to while playing with the Oujja Board. She could also hear some whispers coming from outside the window. All night the girls lay awake talking and worrying. Finally, when the sun came up, the voices stopped. Adele took out her Oujja Board and tore it up, swearing never to play with it again.
