What’s Colour Got to do with it? (Brilliant Biology Experiments)

You will need:

q 30 blank index cards
q Black marker
q Coloured pens
q Volunteers

Conduct a simple experiment to find out what important role colours play in our retention capacity.

INSTRUCTIONS

                1. Divide the index cards into 3 groups— A, B and C.

                2. Write down not very well-known historical dates once each on the three cards.

                3. In set A— write it in black, Set B— write it in code-based colours (e.g. red for horrible event, yellow for joyous occasion, etc).

                4. In set B— write using any colour for any date.

                5. Write the event of the date mentioned on the back in black.

                6. Divide your volunteers into— Control (A), Trend (B), and Random Colours (C).

                7. Give each group the index card for its group and let them study it.

                8. Take away the index card, and orally assess their retention capacity.

                9. Note down how many correctly remembered the dates.

                10. Re-evaluate them for their long-term retention next day.

RESULT

Members from group B will have remembered all the answers correctly, because their brain made associations of the event with the colour it was written in. When they are given the card, their mind sees the association of a happy event with a joyous colour and bad event with a red colour.
