Can you identify an unseen object? After this experiment you can.
Things Required:
Ball of clay with a small object inside
Toothpick
Directions:
Have someone secretly wrap the clay around a small object and mould the clay into a ball. The object must be firm enough so that the pick may not break it. Poke the toothpick into the clay ball about 75 times. Do not change the shape of the ball. Determine the size and shape of the object inside the clay. Guess what is inside the clay ball.
This Is What Happens:
The size and shape can be determined, and, if it is a familiar object, it will be identified.
Science Behind It:
The depth that the toothpick is inserted into the clay gives clues to the size and shape of the object. The firmness of the unseen object is determined when the toothpick touches it. Scientists often make decisions about the size and shape of objects without seeing them. You are using a scientific method called deductive reasoning to identify the unseen object.
