The Night of the Radishes is an annual event celebrated on the 23rd of December in the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. This event originated in the colonial period when radishes were introduced by the Spanish. The Night of the Radishes is dedicated to the carving of oversized radishes for the competition. The artists work to carve figures to win the 15,000 Peso grand cash prize. Tiny scenes depicting life in Oaxaca and the surrounding areas are created out of the radishes of all sizes and shapes.
