Why are brine pools toxic?

A brine pool is a large body of water on the ocean basin that is extremely saline, approximately around three to eight times more than the surrounding water. The source of salt is the salt that gets excluded during the formation of ice in sea water, a common phenomenon in the Antarctic Ocean. The brine also has high concentration of methane. This combination can be quite toxic to marine creatures that stay for too long or too far inside these pools. Creatures go into toxic shock. The dead animals get embalmed in the brine and collect around the pool.
