Why are bugs attracted to light?

An organism, animal or insect’s response to light makes it phototactic organism. If it is attracted towards the light, then it is positively phototactic (like the bugs that circle around the lamps in the night) and if it is not (for example, cockroaches), then it is known as negatively phototactic. Bugs use light as a navigational aid. Moreover, since bugs are unable to differentiate between sunlight and the artificial light, they end up circling around the artificial light which is confusing and frustrating for them. They keep the light or their ‘moon’ in the centre and keep flying around it.
