An anthill is functional due to hundreds of ants working together. Each anthill has its own smell and any interloper with a different smell is chased away. Whenever an ant finds food, it will sprinkle its unique smell on it and rush back to inform others. On its way, it will sprinkle its smell at different places to guide the rest of its anthill members about the location of the food and the way to get to it. That is why, when two ants meet, they will smell each other to make sure that they belong to the same anthill.
