Babies have their fists closed because of one of the most important reflexes present in a baby. This infantile reflex is called the ‘Palmar Grasp Reflex’ due to which infants close their fists around anything that is placed in their tiny palms. It is a strong grasping reflex that children are born with. It is present from birth to the age of 5–6 months. To see the reflex, try to place your finger in its palm. The baby will close it around the finger immediately. The moment you try to take your finger out, the baby will grasp or hold on to the finger even more tightly than before.
