Why do some organisms hibernate?

Hibernation means big changes for animals like bears, skunks, bats, frogs and salamanders, which go into a long, deep sleep during winters. The reason they hibernate is to survive the super chilly winters. These animals change their food habits, sleep patterns among other things, to adjust or survive for long time-periods when there is paucity of food. Their breathing slows down, body temperature drops down below normal and they sleep. The sleeping pattern may change depending on the species, and days and weeks may pass without the animal waking up to eat, drink or relieve itself.
