We need to eat food to get the nutrients needed for maintaining a healthy body. Food gives us energy for doing our work, for growing and maintaining other body functions such as digestion, producing body heat and even for breathing. We need food to produce material for the growth and repair of the body and maintain a healthy immune system. The amount of nutrients needed vary according to age, sex, activity level, menstruation, pregnancy and lactating mothers. The needs differ during sickness and recovery as well. A healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables helps us grow, be active and be healthy.
