Why does the sun hurt our eyes?

Photophobia, or sensitivity to light, is an intolerance to light. This is one reason why sunlight hurts our eyes. There is another reason too. We are able to see because light is able to travel through our eyeball to the retina. The retina is able to process only a certain amount of light that it is accustomed to on a regular day-to-day basis. However, when there is excessive light, or bright light, it is too much energy for our retina to handle or process easily. It has a burn-like sensation. It is our body’s way of telling us that looking at the sun is harmful to the eye and not a very comfortable experience.
