Why is the colour of lips so different from the rest of the body’s colour?

Lips are unique and very different from the rest of the body. They have three layers of
skin – epidermis, stratum corneum and dermis. However, the stratum corneum on lips is far thinner than it is anywhere else on the body. Lips also do not have hair follicles like the rest of the body which makes the colour different too. Lips lack melanin and most importantly, red or pink pigment of lips comes from underlying blood vessels – red-colored, blood-filled capillaries are close to the thin skin on lips.
