Why is there salt in almost everything that we eat?

Sodium or salt is useful for maintaining the body’s fluid levels. A balance between fluid and sodium results in a healthy heart, liver and kidneys, in addition to maintaining normal blood pressure levels. However, an imbalance in sodium intake can result in imbalance in body functions such as underactive thyroid functions and even cardiovascular disease. Another reason for having salt is because humans have evolved to crave salt. Also, it helps preserve and add shelf life to store foods. Not only does it enhance the taste of the food but also decreases the bitterness that is naturally found in other foods like radicchio and coffee.
