William Hilton Hovell was born on 26th April 1786 in Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom, and he died on 9th November 1875 (aged 89 years) in Sydney, Australia. William is known for exploring Australia along with Hamilton Hume; they are credited with exploring much of Victoria. He discovered the Burragorang valley. He and Hamilton Hume were asked to explore the southern part of New South Wales to know about any rivers that might run through that area. Governor Ralph Darling sent a ship to have it explored and William discovered coal in Victoria. This turned out to be an important discovery.
