William Speirs Bruce was born 1st August 1867 in London, England, and he died on 28th October 1921 (aged 54 years) in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. William was a Scottish naturalist, polar scientist and oceanographer who led the first and only Scottish National Antarctic Expedition. He set up the first weather station in Antarctica which was recognized as being the foundation for the studies of modern climatic changes. Between 1907 and 1920 he made many journeys to the Arctic regions, both for scientific and for commercial purposes. He founded the Scottish Oceanographical Laboratory in Edinburgh.

Do you know: William was awarded many honours but the Polar Medal due to his enmity with Sir Clements Markham, the president of the Royal Geographical Society on whose recommendation the Medal was given.
