The Windmills at Kinderdijk are located more specifically in the Alblasserwaard, built between 1738-1740. The largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands, these 19 massive windmills were built for a specific purpose. And that was to keep the ever-rising water out of the polder by pumping water into a reservoir. The windmills form 2 stairways of 8 mills, each that pumps water to a higher level.
Amazing Fact: The sails of the windmills at Kinderdijk were used for conveying messages, such as joyous or sad occasions and even warn locals of Nazi raids during World War-II.
