Wise Advice

Once, the King of Kosala attacked the King of Benaras. Sadly, he killed the King of Benaras and ruled his palace and kingdom. Meanwhile, the queen and her son escaped from the palace. In the countryside, the prince raised a huge army and surrounded the city. He then told the king to surrender the kingdom. The queen was a gentle and kind woman. She wanted to prevent violence and, therefore, she went over to a monk. The monk asked the prince to close the entrance to the city. “Eventually, the lack of food, water and firewood will tire the citizens,” said the monk. The prince agreed. Thus, he barricaded the city for seven days and nights. No one could take food from the countryside into the city or leave the city for food. Troubled and hungry, the citizens captured the King of Kosala. The prince entered the city and became the new King of Benaras.

Moral: Wars can be won without using violence.
